Happy Thriftmas :: Buying Secondhand Gifts this Holiday Season

Every holiday season is an exciting and fun time to celebrate and share and exchange gifts with friends and family. But with stressed supply chains and understaffed stores, this holiday season might be even more stressful than years past.

As such, one of my favorite Instagram accounts is Kelly Stumpe, The Car Mom. She is a mom of two and specializes in giving advice to families about buying/leasing cars. She is doing a ThriftMas Christmas this year, and is buying all her kids’ gifts second hand. This is a GREAT idea, because to be honest, my kids don’t know the difference between a “new” toy and a thrifted toy. Why don’t we all save ourselves the stress and spending money, and try thrifting and have fun!

My Guide to Thrifting for Christmas

Facebook Marketplace – I have sold and bought from Marketplace, and there are so many treasures to find for kids of all ages. I love doing porch pickups and being done with my gift buying.

Once Upon a Child, Kid to Kid – Great stores all year round and it’s always fun wandering around finding affordable things for my kids.

Just Between Friends Frisco/McKinney/Allen/Plano – These groups offer two sales a year and have thousands of items 50-90% off retail prices. The best thing is that everything is under one roof and goes from baby-teens. Any items that aren’t sold are donated to local charities. Check our their websites for sale dates and ways to donate.

Toy Swaps– I’ve heard of friends and neighbors doing toy swaps. Trade or give gently used toys your kids have outgrown to to other friends. It’s like getting new/ used toys all year round.

My goal every year is to have a stress free and enjoyable holiday; I’m hoping that this year, doing a ThriftMas will accomplish this goal by saving money and recycling gently used toys. Happy hunting and Happy ThriftMas!
