Surprise Pregnancy: Life’s Finest Curve Ball

I tend to enjoy having a planned day, week, and well, let’s face it, life. I make lists, I love to color code things, file, label, put calendar reminders on my phone AND in my physical planner, and calculate everything from our budget to yearly income projections. Yes, you get the picture. I am a planner. I’ve given into the chaos that is real life to an extent since having children, but I still try my best to be as organized as possible. Some days I nail it on the head, other days I can’t even find my toothbrush. It’s all about balance, right, mamas?

Both of my children were planned as well and I’ll admit I had always been a bit perplexed about couples with a surprise pregnancy. We’re adults, we know how it happens, so how could it really be a complete surprise? Well, it turns out that karma is a real thing and will come back to bite you in the butt for being a judgmental turd, because a few weeks ago I found out I was pregnant and I cannot come up with anything better to describe the news beyond utter SHOCK. A surprise pregnancy can happen, and boy, can they throw a planner’s life for a loop.

-The “plan” was to stick to two kids. Apparently, two is for the weak. Being outnumbered is the way to go.

-The “plan” was to donate all baby clothes and toys as well as all maternity clothes. Checked this one off my list two weeks before I got the surprise! Whoops.

-The “plan” was to go to Disney World next year, enjoy roller coasters, adult beverages, and water parks. The trip was booked one month before the baby news and is non-refundable. Guess I’ll be riding Dumbo with my toddler for a week straight while sipping lemonade. That’s IF the 24/7 nausea and vomiting go away by then.

-The “plan” was also to lose the baby weight from my last pregnancy. I had just signed up for fitness classes which I quickly canceled and traded in for naps and a prescription for Zofran. The only thing I can keep in are carbs, which really isn’t helping my figure. C’est la vie!

So, there you have it. Transparency at its finest. Surprise Pregnancy. Don’t get me wrong, I am extremely excited. My kids are excited. Although my poor husband’s excitement is overshadowed by guilt, thanks to me reminding him on the daily (as I yell for him to hold my hair back as I dry heave into the toilet) that he ruined my holidays and birthday trip. Yeah, I might be an extreme planner but I can also be categorized as an exaggerator.

So, to all the mamas out there whose babies were a “surprise” or “whoops,” I raise my glass of ginger ale to you and join your stellar club. Because the truth is, we are moms, which means there is nothing life can throw at us that we cannot handle, even a surprise pregnancy when you thought you were done!

Were any of your kids a surprise?
