Easy Mommy-&-Me + Family Costume Ideas for All Ages

Adults never really grow out of dress-up, am I right? October is full of festive fun for so many reasons, but Halloween costumes are the highlight of my month. Don’t get me wrong, I’m all about the pumpkin-themed food, but let me have my one day to pretend I’m a superhero and I’m happy. Add in the whole family for a themed appearance and it just doesn’t get much better than that!

Although Pinterest is great for inspiration, I reached out to friends who are real, everyday moms who make this Halloween magic happen. So check out below for practical and realistic family costume ideas!

When Your Family Won’t Do Matching Halloween Costumes

Sometimes it happens: the guys don’t want to dress up as anything less than a superhero, but the girls love all the frills! It’s all about family compromise here.

My friend Kristina and her daughter look polished in their Minnie attire while her husband and son are ready to protect them. Here are some other house-divided costume ideas:

  • College rivals
  • Princesses & Knights
  • Cops & Criminals
  • Zookeepers & Animals
  • Football players & Cheerleaders
  • Ghosts & Ghostbusters
  • Warriors & Goddesses
  • Celebrities & Paparazzi

Fun Family Costume Ideas

I’ll admit it: superhero-themed family costumes are my favorite. In an audition, I was once asked if I could be any character, who would I be? My answer was “Batgirl.” I’m not ashamed to say I invested in a good Batgirl costume and had it for, ahem, 15 years until I retired it last year. Four years ago, I even managed to convince my whole family to go along with my love of Batman.

The superhero theme is great for any family because you can all wear your favorite but still have a matching theme, just like my friend Brieana did. I love how her son is in his fierce action pose! The sky’s the limit on this fun family superhero route.

ALL-IN MATCHING Family Costume Ideas

Last but not least… I love when the WHOLE family can get in on a group Halloween costume.

Check out my friend Karly and how her family went ALL in! I love this, and by the smiles on the kids’ faces, you can tell they’re creating a fun family memory that will last a lifetime! Here are some additional all-in family ideas:

  • Super Mario Brothers

  • Toy Story
  • Food/Sandwich pieces
