50 Reasons Why I’m Excited to Turn 50

I just turned 50, and I must confess: It’s not at all what I expected.

I don’t know who perpetuated the expectation that we’d have it all figured out by now. Not only is that a lie, but it sets you up for feeling like a failure when you’ve arrived…but then again, you really haven’t.

“Is something wrong with me?” you may ask. Not at all.

It’s hard to discern the truth from the lies about what aging gracefully looks like.

What I’ve Discovered About Turning 50

Yes, it’s a time of transition.

Yes, things change.

No, your life isn’t over! In fact, in many ways, hitting this golden milestone is just beginning.

I love this quote from one of the birthday cards I received:

“Let the fire of 50 birthday candles ignite a fire in you for this next stage of life.”

Embrace Turning 50

As I reflect on my own journey to becoming a quinquagenarian, here are:

  42. If gray hair is a sign of wisdom, then you’re a genius.
  43. Going gray is trendy; yay!
  44. You can laugh, sneeze, cough, and pee all at the same time.
  45. It’s the only time you get to say you’re nifty fifty.
  46. Fifty and fabulous.
  47. Mid-century modern.
  48. You’re not old, you’re vintage.
  49. Cheers to 50 years.
  50. Life gets better at 50.

So mamas, if you’re edging closer to that once-dreaded golden milestone, I’m here to say don’t fear it. Embrace it.

Like the beloved Betty White says, “You’re never too old for anything!”

It only gets better from here!

Alisa Hauser
Alisa’s 15 minutes of fame was as a news reporter just after college. These days, she embraces multiple roles – a mom of three (one teenager and two who are #adulting), a writing consultant, and a college application coach. When she’s not in a Zoom session, you can find her in her backyard with a chiminea fire. She loves indie movies, eclectic music, random road trips, hole-in-the-wall restaurants, her family "bubble", and her cat Jack Jack (although not necessarily in that order). She grew up as a military brat, residing in four countries and eleven states before settling in the Dallas area. After 20 years here, and with the help of her Aggie daughter, she can seamlessly use “y’all” and “howdy” in a sentence like a true Texan.
