Innovative Education for Jobs that Don’t Yet Exist :: The SmartLab @ POPCS

This post has been sponsored by Prince of Peace Christian School, but opinions are 100% our own!

As a mom, I want nothing more for my children than for them to be safe, loved, and prepared for the life that is ahead of them. An executive from a Fortune 100 company recently told me that students today need to be prepared for jobs that don’t even exist yet. That’s overwhelming to think about! It’s a daunting task to find a school that will both educate and prepare my children for something that hasn’t yet been created, while at the same time cares for and nurtures them. It can be easy to feel like you must sacrifice one for the other.

If you’re like my husband and me, we want to find a school that not only allows our children to excel academically and prepares them for their future, but also provides an environment with nurturing teachers who encourage their passions and make them feel safe and known. That’s part of why I believe Prince of Peace Christian School stands out from the other private schools in the area.

Here’s a snapshot of why Prince of Peace stands out from the crowd:

Innovative Education and Academic Excellence

Prince of Peace Christian recently dedicated a 2,400 square-foot SmartLab® learning environment, which features 400 STEM learning experiences in more than 60 content areas, and has 18 workstations and extension activities for advanced learners to explore topics in greater depth. Students from Grades 2-8 explore science, mathematics, engineering, technology, and media arts through applied technology and project-based learning.

In other words, the SmartLab is a big deal. Students at Prince of Peace aren’t passive consumers of technology; they’re active creators. I’ve seen firsthand how students’ problem solving skills, creativity, and collaboration have soared since working in the lab.

These soft skills will set students apart in a world where memorizing facts for a standardized test has become the norm. I’ve observed struggling students come to life in the lab with an excitement they haven’t felt at school, and I’ve watched top performers be pushed and challenged in ways that have made them even stronger. As a mom of four children who have many different interests, talents, and skill levels, it’s incredibly difficult to find a program that appeals to and benefits each of them.

Nurturing and Safe Community

POPCS is a Christ-centered school with a strong community that loves and cares for each student. It is one of only a few private Christian schools in the DFW area that does not require a statement of faith from any student or their families. That means everyone is welcome and included; it’s part of what makes this unique community so special. Students rarely reach their full potential without feeling known or valued, and Prince of Peace Christian is known for noticing, nurturing, and developing each student’s talents and passions. Students thrive in classrooms where teachers celebrate their hard work and success. POPCS builds relationships with students and families, values diversity, encourages teamwork, and is committed to continuous improvement and reflection.

Ashley Ashcraft has spent the majority of her life in North Texas. Born in Dallas, she attended Concordia University of Texas in Austin for an undergraduate degree and spent her mid-20’s in beautiful, easy-going Hawaii where she taught at a high school and obtained a M.E. in Educational Foundations from the University of Hawaii. The birth of her first daughter, now seven years old, brought her and her husband back to Texas and to family. Since then, they’ve added two more girls and a boy to the mix. Ashley now teaches at Prince of Peace Christian School in Carrollton (Go Eagles!) and has learned it takes a village and a lot of grace to be a wife, mom of four, teacher, and avid Eagle fan, but she is thankful for all of it. In the evenings you can usually find her supporting Eagles’ sports, trying to keep up with laundry, coaxing her kids to eat meat, or enjoying time out in the neighborhood with her wonderful neighbors. Ashley is not an expert mom, but she’s surrounded by an amazing tribe of women that help her to be the best mom and wife possible. She recently started blogging at As You Do Life and you can also find her on Twitter @AshleyAshcraft .
